Scouts are adventurous, curious, and journey off the beaten path. Here at Scout, we strive for the same. Scout’s mission is to be the most trusted seafood brand in North America while reducing food waste and protecting our oceans. We are carving out our path in the canned seafood space, and straying away from the traditional industry. We want you to come along for the adventure.
We have some new and exciting products launching soon. Sign up here to be the first to know!
Sourcing
We prioritize North American sourcing for all of our products. All of our seafood is from North American waters, so it is ethical and traceable. To learn more about our sourcing by species, check out our responsibility page here!
MSC is the Marine Stewardship Council. The blue fish means that products are wild, traceable, sustainable: the blue fish label is only applied to wild fish or seafood from fisheries that have been certified to the MSC Fisheries Standard, a science-based set of requirements for sustainable fishing.
Scout’s lobster and tuna products are MSC certified. It is clearly labelled on our package, and each product can can be traced to a certified sustainable fishery.

Enjoying Scout
Products are best stored at room temperature in a cool dry place.
Our canned seafood line has a five-year shelf life from the date of production. Each can includes a best before date on the bottom of the can.
Scout products are ready to enjoy straight out of the can, or they can be added to your favorite recipe, see some inspirationhere!
The can is lined and it's safe to re-heat. Our products are cooked in the can, not beforehand, so it's safe to heat the product in the can. Be mindful of not blasting it with too much heat as it's already cooked. You just want to warm it up!
Nutritional
Our production facilities are nut-free, and our facilities perform allergen checks regularly. Our products are sesame and nut-free, however, our spice blends are mixed in a facility that manufactures other products, including sesame.
Scout products may contain dairy and shellfish. Please read the label of each product before consuming!
We strongly recommend consulting with your doctor as we can't give out health suggestions or recommend what is best for each individual.
Our mussels are certified organic from PEI. The ocean floor and waters are consistently tested and only biodegradable and environmentally friendly materials are used for seeding and packing. Our lobster and tuna is wild-harvested, and our trout is responsibly farmed.
We prioritize local products for our seafood here in North America. All of our other ingredients are grown/processed in North American whenever possible (e.g. our Sunflower Oil is from a fourth-generation family farm in Ontario, Canada).
Scout products are all-natural and contain zero additives or preservatives.
Scout sources our tuna from the Pacific Northwest and the population is tested annually for mercury via the Canadian Highly Migratory Species Foundation (CHMSF). Analysis of mercury in BC Albacore falls well below safety standards set by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the USFDA.
Our trout are farmed and raised in lake net pens in Ontario lakes. The trout are fed certified sustainable feed that meets their dietary requirements for a happy and healthy trout. Every year, the CFIA samples our trout, which on average have levels below 0.01ppm of mercury, well under the limit deemed safe for consumption.
Both lobster & mussels are naturally low in mercury. We do not test our Lobster and Mussels because there are no mercury concerns given the diet and maturity of those species. Mercury is a concern for highly migratory species that feed for several years or decades on smaller fish which causes them to accumulate mercury (Marlin, Swordfish, etc.)
Packaging
There is little to no production of cans with BPA anymore, and has been phased out over the past few decades. Rest assured, our cans are BPA-free and are lined with a lacquer called Organosol, to help maintain the integrity of the can when combined with acidic foods, such as the tomato sauce in our mussels.
We’ve thought a lot about packaging in both terms of environmental impact and design. We decided to package our cans within a box to ensure that we had space to share our story and environmental practices. Our packaging includes information on sourcing, production, recipe pairing suggestions, facts on ocean sustainability, and our 1% for the ocean program. The box is made from recycled materials and non-toxic water-soluble ink. We choose a unique can shape that is BPA-free and recyclable. We will never create packaging with plastic… ever. It can be a challenge balancing branding with low-impact packaging and we are happy with where we’ve landed.
All of our Scout products reflect the true cost of the seafood and ingredients. We ensure the responsible sourcing of our seafood, and that everyone (fishermen and factory workers) in our supply chain is paid fairly. All of our seafood is caught in North American waters, and all of our products are hand-cut and hand-packed. Our sourcing and processing methods are inherently more costly in comparison to commodity prices of fresh and frozen seafood, but it’s something we’re not willing to compromise on. We reinvest back into our fishing communities through our 1% for the Planet contributions.
The canning process starts with sourcing the highest quality ingredients. We hand-cut and hand-pack each of our cans. The cans are then put into a retort, and all oxygen is removed from the can through heat and pressure. This allows the ingredients to be preserved and cooked and a regulated temperature to adhere to health and safety standards and guarantee long shelf life. No additives or preservatives are used whatsoever.
At Scout, our products are made commercially in federally inspected and licensed facilities. Our products are made with great care by skilled professionals with full FDA and CFIA (Canadian Food and Inspection Agency) compliance. Our East Coast production partner is also BRC certified and has been in operation since 1955, while our West Coast production partner has been in operation since 1961.
Scout products are all-natural and our seafood is cut and packed by hand. On rare occasions, there is a chance you will find a small piece of shell or bone in your can. We do not use mechanical separation with our products to ensure a higher quality seafood experience.
