Wild Caught & Aquaculture
WHY IT MATTERS
Seafood is the primary protein source for more than half the planet. Our oceans and waterways are the most regenerative ecosystems on earth, but unfortunately, there is no effective global regulation or enforcement of illegal fishing and environmental degradation. Governments, the seafood industry and consumers all have a role to play in protecting the most precious ecosystem and food source on earth.
Our oceans cover over 70% of the planet and it’s time to start thinking about our oceans and waterways as the farmlands of the future. We cannot continue to clear cut forests for cattle and destroy our top soil for commodity crops. We can harvest and farm hundreds of species from the ocean without any inputs like fertilizers or the fresh water needed to raise livestock and crops on land. Our oceans can provide sustenance to the world's growing population but we need to stop overfishing popular species like tuna. We need to encourage biodiversity in our seafood consumption to allow ecosystems and species populations to re-build.
To achieve a more sustainable future, we have to strike a balance of sourcing the most responsible wild caught species along with the most responsibly farmed seafood.
1 % FOR THE PLANET
Scout is a proud member of One Percent for the Planet, an international organization whose members contribute at least one percent of their annual sales to environmental causes. Scout re-invests 1% into climate action projects that help protect our oceans and waterways, with a commitment to investing more as we grow.
THE MARINE STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL
We only work with wild seafood species that are not at risk according to MSC global standards. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an independent non-profit organization which sets a standard for sustainable fishing. Our co-founder and chef Charlotte Langley is the Canadian Chef Ambassador with the organization.
CERTIFIED B CORPORATION (PENDING)
Scout is a pending B corporation. Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.
NOT FOR SALE
Not for Sale is our non profit partner and first recipient of our 1% for the planet contribution. NFS works to end exploitation worldwide. Lack of economic opportunity and environmental degradation leads to exploitation. Not For Sale is fighting for a world where people and planet live in harmony and are Not for Sale.
SeaTrees - Reforest the Ocean
SeaTrees is Scout’s official 1% for the Planet partner. Together we are on a mission to plant 1 Million SeaTrees - we’re on track to achieve that in 2021. Our longer-term goal is to support 100 SeaTrees projects by 2030, in-turn becoming a global leader in developing blue-carbon projects.
We believe the ocean has superpowers – and we can work with it to reverse climate change. But there’s no time to waste – the global scientific consensus is clear that we have the next 10 years to reduce our collective carbon footprint – to avoid passing a catastrophic climate tipping point.
