DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR SEAFOOD COMES FROM?
At Scout, we believe that’s where impact begins. Seafood is the primary protein source for more than half the planet. Our oceans and waterways are the most regenerative ecosystems on earth. All of our sourcing decisions are mindfully made, with consideration for the future health of our planet.
OUR SOURCED SPECIES
TUNA
PACIFIC NORTHWEST ALBACORE TUNA
VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA
YELLOWFIN TUNA
TAPACHULA, MEXICO
Scout sources both its MSC-certified wild albacore tuna and wild yellowfin tuna from the Pacific. Scout’s wild albacore tuna, used in the Craft Can line, is harvested between Oregon and British Columbia. Each tuna is harvested one by one using hooks on long lines that trail behind the vessel, never going lower than a few meters, ensuring almost zero bycatch of non-target species. The tuna are instantly stunned, bled, and flash frozen to retain flavour and nutritional composition.
Scout’s wild yellowfin tuna, used in Scout Seafood Snacks, is sourced from Mexico with our cannery partners and friends located in Tapachula, Mexico. The fishery is MSC-certified and employs the purse-seine catch method. Before harvesting, divers are sent in to remove any non-target species that may have been caught in the nets to avoid bycatch. As a vertically integrated partner, Scout brings fully traceable and responsibly sourced yellowfin tuna to our customers, including a supply chain that honors fair wages and working conditions.

SALMON
WILD PINK SALMON,
ALASKA
The Alaskan Pink Salmon found in Scout products is sourced using gillnet or purse-seine; the advantage to these methods is that these fishing nets never come in contact with the seabed and have low levels of bycatch, assisting in the protection of the surrounding ecosystems.
Scout’s sourcing partner, Northline Seafoods of Sitka, Alaska, works with fresh-caught Pink Salmon directly from MSC-certified regional fishers. The salmon is immediately sent to a floating processor, giving consumers the freshest, highest quality products, while supporting responsible fisheries in the region.

LOBSTER
ATLANTIC CANADIAN LOBSTER
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
Scout’s MSC-certified lobster is from the Eastern Canada offshore lobster fishery. We source our lobster right from the dock at our cannery in PEI for a direct chain of custody from boat to can.
We know exactly where, what day, and by whom each lobster was caught. The fishery uses baited traps and ensures sustainable fishing by applying restricted season openings and minimum lobster sizes so that smaller lobsters have a chance to grow and spawn, maintaining a healthy population for years to come. The fishery is committed to ongoing peer-reviewed, cooperative assessments of the status of the lobster stock.

MUSSELS
ORGANIC MUSSELS,
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
The farming of mussels is one of the most regenerative foods that our planet offers. Mussel aquaculture requires zero inputs. This means no feed, no fertilizer, and no additional water. Mussels instead survive by consuming phytoplankton and other particulate matter, in turn, filtering and cleaning the water in which they inhabit. This natural filtration process is critical when it comes to promoting biodiversity within our aquatic ecosystems.
Mussels are rope-grown and cultivated by sowing mussel seeds on “socks” that are then farmed in open inlets off the coast of Prince Edward Island. Buoys are used to ensure the growing mussels float above the bottom of the water to avoid grit or sand ending up in the mussels. After harvesting, our mussels are inspected, cleaned, and graded by hand. Our partner farm, PEI Aqua Farms, uses filtration systems during processing to prevent runoff of sediments and other bio-wastes. It uses the bio-waste and converts it to organic fertilizer for secondary markets before sending the mussels down the road to our cannery to be preserved for your enjoyment.

OUR IMPACT PLEDGE
Our oceans and waterways are the most regenerative ecosystems on earth, but unfortunately, there is no all-encompassing global regulation or enforcement of laws preventing illegal fishing and environmental degradation. By working with third-party auditors and committing to ongoing peer-reviewed, cooperative assessments, we hold ourselves accountable to the highest possible sourcing standards.
Seafood companies and consumers all have a role to play in protecting the most precious ecosystem and food source on earth by the decisions we make.
